I find it difficult to maintain an ordered squad when those involved get themselves tossed in the brig. Hmnf! If you hear this, Zuko, you will answer to me when your punishment ends. Or King. Pray that he is more forgiving than I am.

[He mutters something that sounds like "damn kids". Maybe. Or maybe you're hearing things.]

The rest of you will report in. Want to talk to you.

Hey. It wasn't his fault.

[He's referring to Zuko. And he's a bit put-out that Ironhide The Awesome is being a jerk about it.]

You know what happened?

[Because, really, all he knows is that the kid went to jail. Which usually isn't a good thing.]

He killed Azula, but she set him up, led him into it.

[Sokka's not happy.]

She's had it coming.

Tell me exactly what happened, boy. What did she do?

... and who is she?

No. I'll tell you what I think Zuko's comfortable with me sharing. And you can't let on that I told you much of anything at all.

[Sokka's voice is determined. Because he can hang up this comm line right now if Ironhide doesn't agree to his terms. It's a matter of Zuko's personal space. Zuko can give Ironhide the details if he needs to. Sokka will just tell a vague version of the story but fill in the details about Azula that proves how much she deserved it.]

[That determination sort of impresses him. He didn't think the kid would have the spine to stand up to him.]

I will listen. And I will not speak of it.

[It would have been a bit harder face-to-face, but Sokka's tired of just laying down and letting things happen. And he's not going to have someone that he actually respects be out-right mean to one of his friends, now that he finally thinks that he can actually call Zuko by that term.]

What he told me before he got sent to the brig was that she used us-- that is, my friends and I from back home-- to drag him out. Probably the exact same tactic she used on me when she mur-- killed, me. And ultimately, he ended up killing her.

[There's a pause.]

Azula is Zuko's sister. I don't think Zuko wanted to kill her. But she's-- she's cruel. One of the few honestly evil people I've ever met. And the horrible thing is, as much as she deserved it... I think it bothers Zuko. I think he feels really guilty.

[And this is why he doesn't need any bad-mouthing from you, Ironhide.]

[There's a very dangerous pause, that has nothing to do with the Zuko situation.]

... She did what, boy...?

[And then he goes quiet for a moment, turning this over in his processor. He's loud, brash, and grouchy, but damn it if he isn't protective of what he considers to be his. And he considers everyone on that team as his.]

When next you speak to him, tell him I want to talk to him. No shouting, no lectures. I want to know what this woman is capable of, and what we intend to do about it.

No one manipulates my team...

I already have a plan. It'll take a little bit of time, but I have one.

And you don't have to ask Zuko what Azula's capable of. I can definitely tell you everything you need to know there. I've got a lot of experience with her from back home.

... He is part of my team. What sort of captain does not look out for his troops, hm? Still want to speak to him.

While I have a plan, I didn't say it was particularly developed. Right now, it just involves training. So we can fight back when this happens again.

[Because it will. This is Azula we're talking about, after all. But he's happy to hear there's someone else out there who'll look out for Zuko. Aang's here, Toph's here, but he doesn't know if Katara or Hakoda would actually help him out. Hakoda, maybe.

At this point, he doesn't know what his sister thinks of Zuko.]

Azula's... there's no other way to put it: she's really strong. She's a firebender. She's got hotter-than-normal fire, it's blue instead of the average flame-color. She can shoot lightning, which I've seen first-hand-- it almost killed one of my friends back home. Even when she can't bend, she's really acrobatic, she can slink and squirm her way out of anything... and, failing all that, she's ridiculously manipulative. She lies so much that you start to wonder where she's telling the truth, or if she ever does, and--

[He falls silent for a long time.]

I died because I couldn't call her bluff.

... That is part of the reason I require my team to meet. To train them. All of them.

[A pause. Thoughtful.]

You could come. If you know the boy, might make a good partner for him.

[Ironhide's not very good at sympathy. So he doesn't remark on the last bit. It wouldn't come out right.]

Your information is valuable... I will keep it in mind.

Actually... I was already planning on asking him. When he gets out, I mean. I think he'll be able to help me with fighting Azula-- they're both firebenders, so...

[This is almost a lie. He wants Zuko to help him get over his fear of fire. Ironhide doesn't need to know about that.]

I might have to take you up on that at some point. But yeah. Glad I could help.

... Appreciate you telling him I want to speak with him. I am... hmn. I lack tact.

[Which is fairly large admission out of Ironhide. While he's aware of this, he doesn't usually come out and say it.]

Train with us, once I have this team under control. Both of you. This woman needs to learn that there are others who will not stand for this. That you have allies less vulnerable to fire.

Right. I'll-- yeah, no problem.

[He wonders if he should mention that this woman is only 14, she's just a little girl.]

[Sokka sounds somewhat melancholic now, though.]

[He doesn't respond right away. There's a sound like an inhalation.]

... I take care of my own. Your friend is on my team. He counts as my own. I can promise you that.
